About

Gazing Grain Press is an inclusive feminist literary press staffed by alumni of the George Mason University creative writing MFA program. Each year, the press publishes a chapbook of poems and a chapbook of prose, with a special emphasis on hybrid work. Gazing Grain also publishes book reviews, interviews, and ephemera, and maintains a feminist resource database. Gazing Grain Press is generously sponsored by the Fall for the Book literary festival, an annual, week-long event based out of George Mason University. Our name derives from a line in the poem “[Because I could not stop for Death],” by one of our favorite feminist poets, Emily Dickinson.

Mission Statement:

Gazing Grain Press was founded in 2012 to fill a gap in the publishing landscape. Alongside important and excellent publishers of women and LGBTQ feminist writers, Gazing Grain publishes feminists of every gender and sexuality. We believe that inclusive feminism makes available space for a diversity of writerly identities. We are interested in socially conscious work that explores ideas of identities as connected to gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity, culture, and ability. We adhere to no one “definition” of feminism–we encourage a broad and diverse range of approaches. Challenge us!
